Hayden was a major figure in mid-century and postmodern African American literature. Auden at University of Michigan where he won the Hopwood. Awarded the inaugural grand prize for poetry at the First World Festival of Negro Arts in Dakar, Senegal in 1966, he received an Academy of American Poets Fellowship in 1975 and was the first African American to be appointed Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, which has since been renamed the position of US Poet Laureate.
