An original super rare poster/print- The Owl by the late great Paul Peter Piech, very early example of his work 1979-signed and numbered by artist. I have correspondence from the V&A museum that this item is NOT in their collection of Piech prints, i was also contacted by the great Jim Creed, curator of the Piech collection from the wales college of prints that this isnt even in their collection, i was also informed that this poster/print is an early example of the late Piech's work in existence. Grab yourself a bargain and a future investment, the print is 25" in height by 18" by width it has never ever been framed or pinned or even tacked to a wall, its in its original rolled state.
The content is by the welsh poet Owen Thomas. Below is an extract from mine and jim Creeds correspondence: bag a bargain please see other items. Jim Creed curated Piech collection at the Regional Print Centre/Coleg Cambria for over 12 years (before leaving in 2019) and has conducted a range of projects and research into his work, as well as curating exhibitions at regional and national venues (The People's History Museum in 2016/17). The print is numbered 28/30 and dated 1979.This is quite a small edition of 30 prints - Piech usually printed editions for exhibitions or commissions. It is also quite early in terms of his poster prints as the main bulk of this work was created in the 1980s. It is a linocut print - the blue text would have been cut in reverse/backwards into two sheets on lino in order for it to be printed the correct and legible way round. The Owl title would have also be cut in the same way of a different piece of lino. I would say that the central image of the Owl could be a woodcut print (based on the cutting marks).
"The Owl" poem by Edward Thomas, is a first world war poem and Piech printed a wide range of poems throughout his career - in some cases he worked directly with the poets. He was a massive fan of poetry and this was his main reason for printing poems - it was about a personal connection.
The national poetry library have a good collection of his work. I would argue that it is a rare print - as there are only 30 in the edition. Piech may have reused the text and image in different prints but this is an earlier example of his poster style prints all of which he printed himself in his home studio (using a Thompson Press) - at this time it would have been his garage in Bushey Heath, Middlesex.
