5 5/8" by 8 1/2"painted onto paper which is wrapped around and taped to a thin piece of cardboard with "Day by Day / Robert Lowell" printed on a 4 3/16" x 2 1/8" paper label affixed at 13/16 below the top edge. The design is a horizontal graphic pattern in shades of dark orange and pale yellow, differing from the final design which is more red and black, although the lettering is identical to the final published work by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1977.

On the verso is written: Matte Neg. Of title panel only = 150% Title seems about 4 or 5% too large in its space OK to reduce slightly? OK to reduce" and is dated and initialed "April 8'77 CES.
