Kim MacConnel: Poetry Project Poster, 1990. Color silkscreen 27 x 29 1/2 in.
(68.6 x 75.1 cm) Signed. The artist Kim MacConnel is a leading figure in the pattern and decoration movement of the 1970s, known for his paintings and fabric collages. MacConnel's works often take the form of large, patterned wall-hangings in a palette of bright earth tones. His work is strongly inspired by folk art, both Western and non-Western, as seen in works such as Spare Time Shooting Practice (1978), a series of layered synthetic fabrics in polka dot, paisley, and floral prints, resembling a classic American quilt. He persuades the viewer to appreciate the appeal and conceptual property of patterns and draws inspiration from such wide-ranging and multicultural resources as the textile arts of numerous world regions, found graphic images, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso.MacConnel has worked in San Diego for the past 30 years, and has recently retired as a professor of art from UCSD. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Aspen Art Museum, the California Center for the Arts, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, and San Diego's Museum of Contemporary Art.
