Quartos, cloth-covered boards with gilt and silver lettering and floral/avian decoration, all edges gilt. 134 with duplicated preliminary leaves including color frontis, so although 12 color plates are called for, there are 13, with 2 copies of Orioles and Plum Blossoms. Text consists of various poems with bird themes.
The artist was considered part of the American pre-Raphaelite movement, but she evolved away from the style and fell into obscurity after she died in the early 20th century. Rediscovery in the 1980s brought her a fresh legion of followers, however.
