Antique LEAVES OF GRASS book WALT WHITMAN 1940 Special Edition Illustrated Art

  

A pleasure to read and also enjoy as a beautifully bound special edition collectors book with fantastic WPA type early modernist artwork. LEAVES OF GRASS by WALT WHITMAN. Published 1940 by Doubleday Doran and in its original cardboard slipcase box. The box that holds the book is worn, stained, faded, has some tears and missing pieces- but has protected the book itself well over the years.

Sized a big 11" by 8 1/2" and 1 1/2 thick. The illustrations are FANTASTIC and in both color and black and white. They are by illustrator Lewis C Daniel and have a WPA sensibility.

Very reminiscent of Thomas Benton Hart. There are AT LEAST 30 illustrations and they are FULL PAGE. The book has a tight binding and the covers are special - a kind of reed like woven cloth or grass like cover that is very special and is in nice condition. Some sunning or lightening on spine from longtime shelf storage. The paper label on the spine has some stains but is intact.

Inside the covers the blank pages have some foxing or browning, BUT the interior pages are CLEAN BRIGHT AND FRESH with no fading. I dont think the owner of this book ever read it!
