Up for sale is this lovely antique commonplace/friendship book belonging to one Harriet Maria Brown of Pembroke, New York. The book contains a variety of poems, excerpts, etc. It is mostly full with approximately 50 pages of hand written content on 36 leaves. There are a few blank versos and rectos and just a couple of leaves which are completely blank. One of the pages has a lock of hair tucked into a small handmade pocket and another page has a loose lock of hair laid in.
A couple of pages have some nice calligraphy and another page has an entry that looks like it's written in some kind of secret code. There is also a small piece of paper containing handwritten poetry which is tucked between 2 leaves.
The book is illustrated with 5 nice steel engravings. The red leather covers have some moderate scuffing and wear with some chipping & loss to the leather near the head of the spine. The interior pages are lightly toned from age with some occasional foxing, soiling & grubbiness. Some pages have a bit of fading to the ink. A few pages may have a small chip or tear, creased page corner, light wrinkle, etc.
Most of the entries are dated to the late 1830's with a few from the late 1840's. The book measures approximately 7 3/4 inches by 6 1/4 inches. All in all a really wonderful old friendship journal. Please look at all of the photos to further note the condition.
