On October 20, 1986 tensions ran high in Tom Mankiewicz's studio office, the night before his directorial debut. Renown screenwriter and script doctor responsible for literally hundreds of Hollywood movie and TV scripts, Tom Mankiewicz had a tricky assignment (perfect for his skills), adapting and directing Jack Webb's.

Working from lead actor Dan Ackroyd's campy comedy script, the material played up Ackroyd's brilliant spoofs of the uptight, fast talking Joe Friday, a sketch routine first made popular on Saturday Night Live.
