Gustave Dore, it has always seemed to me, was a motion-picture art director born before his time. This fine folio edition of Dante's Purgatory and Paradise published by Cassell is a rare English edition, translated by H. Cary, and is Cary's most famous and important work.

In 1814, Cary published his translation on his own, as publishers would not take on the risk. This particular undated edition is scarce and is illustrated with plates of Gustave Dore! New York, London and Paris: Cassell & Company, [1890]. Collation: Complete with all pages.
