1880 Scribner's withnew EDGAR A. POE Daguerreotype & Stedman's Important Essay

  

Scribner's Monthly Magazine, Vol XX, May-Oct 1880. Important volume containing the first appearance of the new 1880 wood engraving of Edgar Allen Poe (pic 1) by Timothy Cole taken from the copy of the "Ultima Thule" daguerreotype discovered about 1880 in the possession of Dr.

Henry Sylvester Cornwell, who probably acquired it from Sarah Helen Whitman sometime before she died in 1878. This now-famous engraving of Poe first appeared as the frontispiece for the May 1880 issue of Scribner's to accompany Poe scholar E. Stedman's lengthy and influential essay "Edgar Allan Poe, " which was also first published in the same issue.

The Steadman "Edgar Allan Poe" - pp. 107-124 in this vol (see pics) - is considered... The most comprehensive essay on Poe before 1900.

The Works of Edgar Allan Poe (ten volumes, 1895). In 1904, Edmund Clarence Stedman was one of the first seven, along with William Dean Howells, Samuel L. Clemens and John Hay to be chosen for membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Other notable entries in this vol include the first appearances of poems by Julia Dorr, Bayard Taylor, Phoebe Carey, Alice Carey, Ann Lynch; articles and stories by George W.

Cable, Charles Dudley Warner, Frances Hodgson Burnett, Sidney Lanier, Thomas Dunn English, Elizabeth Ellet; biographies of F. Darley, William Wordsworth, and Millard Fillmore (by Poe nemesis Rufus Griswold). Heavy (3.5 lbs), 144-year-old book is in good shape with some exterior wear (see pics), internally complete and in very good condition.
