1837 Fisher's Drawing Room Scrap-Book, Poems, Engravings, Glenclyffe Provenance

  

This is a beautifully illustrated antique book of poetry, "Fisher's Drawing Room Scrap-Book" with numerous engraved plates by L. 1837; Fisher, Son, & Co.

Ornate leather spine with gilt lettering and decorations. Cloth covers with embossed illustrations and a gilt illustration at the center. Gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. The book is a collection of poems interspersed with wonderful full-page engravings (with tissue guards). Many of the poems include a smaller illustration at the beginning. PROVENANCE: This copy bears the label "Glenclyffe" on the front pastedown. "Glenclyffe" is a historic 16,000 square foot mansion built on a 93 acre parcel of land on the Hudson River in the hamlet of Garrison, New York.

The Glenclyffe mansion was acquired by Hamilton Fish, Governor of New York (1848) and Secretary of State (1869) under President Ulysses S. Grant and Abraham Lincoln had both visited the Glenclyffe mansion. The property on which the mansion was built was used as an escape route by Benedict Arnold after his attempted surrender at West Point during the Revolutionary War.
