1813 Scarborough Sketches 21 Color Illustrated PLATES Poems Art Humor Rowlandson. A fine collection of poetical illustrations and satire. The advertisement of Poetical Sketches of Scarborough tells us the original 21 color plates were sketches made as souvenirs of the place during a visit to Scarborough in 1812. They were not intended for publication, but being found to interest many persons of taste, several of whom expressed a desire to possess engravings of them, and some gentlemen having offered to add metrical illustrations to each the present form of publication has been adopted.

The poems that were written to accompany the illustration were written by three separate authors. Green, the aquatint being added by J. Then follows a pleasant account of Scarborough in very amusing doggerel to which [William] Combe was a contributor (Prideaux).

Francis Wrangham contributed four chapters. This rare edition includes all 21 colored plates!
