An excellent copy of the second edition of Dryden's translation of du Fresnoy's'De Arte Gaphica', the narrative poem in which provides his observations on the art of painting. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed. This book weighs 0.75 KG when packed. The second, enlarged edition, of John Dryden's English language translation of Charles Alphonse du Fresnoy's Latin poem about the art of painting, termed a critical treatise on the practice of the art, including general advice to students. Rebound in half morocco, and illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. This second edition is believed to have been edited by painter Charles Jervas, with the assistance of Alexander Pope, and includes a dedicatory verse poem to Jervas from Pope'To Mr. Pope greatly admired Dryden's translation of the work, as did Dr. Samuel Johnson, who borrowed hundreds of quotations from it for his Dictionary. Richard Graham's biographical chronology of renowned painters,'A Short Account of the Most Eminent Painters', appears to the rear with a separate title page, as called for. With a former owner's inscription, dated 1874, to the verso of the frontispiece. An exceptionally lovely copy of this treatise.Rebound in half morocco, with cloth covered boards and endpapers renewed. A touch of fading to back strip.
Inscriptions to recto of frontispiece. Spotting and light discolouration to first and last few leaves, with pages otherwise generally clean and bright, with only the odd spot. Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear.Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy. Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones. Often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy.
