She began drawing at the age of three and eventually studied at at the East Sydney Technical College. After running away from home in her teens, she became an artist's model, worked as a newspaper artist, and in various occupations including kitchen maid, waitress, nightclub assistant, toy designer, banana plantation hand and telegraph messenger.
