Lawrence Hertzberg (grandson of the founder, Ernst) signed a blank front endpaper; could this book perhaps be the work of his grandfather... Or is it Edward's (his father) or Lawrence's work? The binding remains unstamped, and only a careful examination of the tools could possibly solve the mystery. Beginning in 1868, the Monastery Hill bindery, in Chicago, proved itself to be one of America's most successful and high-regarded binderies late into the 20th century.

20 x 12.5 x 3 cm.. Board framed in gilt ruled, with inner frame decorated in gilt stipple, with six onlaid red Art Nouveau flowers inside the inner frame (corners, and at center). Spine with five raised cords, ruled in gilt; five compartments with onlaid flowers matching the boards, and one compartment with the title and author in gilt. Board edges ruled in gilt. Turn ins with three frames ruled in gilt.

Silk moire endpapers and doublures. Pages - (2), 459, blank, (2). A little sunning to leather. A little rubbing at edges and joints.

Two small cracks at top of spine, missing top endband. Edges of silk moire endpapers rubbed. Evidence of a scribble on front silk more free-front endpaper.

Blank unpaginated front endpaper signed by Lawrence, with several small fox spots at bottom of leaf, several ink spots to verso of same leaf. Occasional spot, thumb and pencil check mark throughout.
