Antique 1836 HANDWRITTEN COMMONPLACE BOOK Poetry Journal NEAR MINIATURE Artwork

Up for sale is this lovely little antique American commonplace friendship book. The book is near miniature in size, measuring approximately 3 3/8 inches by 4 inches. It contains a variety of poems, excerpts, etc. It has entries from Albany & Buffalo, New York as well as entries from Williams College & Cummingham, Massachusetts. There are also several entries from Plainfield which could be associated with several different states. The book is mostly full with only a few leaves which are completely blank. There are approximately 60 pages of handwritten content on 44 leaves. One of the pages has a lovely little botanical folk art watercolor painting and three other pages are illustrated with a small hand colored lithograph. The blank pages are mixed between the pages with content.

The book is bound in decorative tooled leather covers which have a depiction of Jesus at the center. The covers have some light scuffing and wear. The front fep has been excised. The interior pages are lightly toned from age with some occasional foxing, ink smudges, soiling & grubbiness.

Some pages have a bit of fading to the ink. A few pages may have a small chip or tear, creased page corner, light wrinkle, etc. The majority of the dated entries were written between 1836 and the 1840's.
